Louisville Metro Events Offer Free School Supplies, Health Screenings

Free school supplies and health screenings will be  available starting this week for Louisville families to help prepare students for the start of the school year.Community centers, schools and Neighborhood Places around the city are working with the city’s Department of Community Services to provide the resources to residents at events beginning July 31 and continuing through August 9.Debbie Belt, a spokeswoman for the Department of Community Services, said the events are essential for helping students get ready for the first day of school.“We know, for a fact, that without them there would be kids that would start and not have the supplies they need,” she said.  “We just want the kids to start with the tools they need and have that happy, fresh start to the first day of school." The supplies were given through donations or provided by community groups.Here is a breakdown from Community Services of where and when the events will be: July 31, Back to School Festival at Stuart Middle School, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Located at 4600 Valley Station Rd. Call 363-1483 for more information. The annual Back to School Festival will provide school supplies, the opportunity for families to learn about a variety of topics, time for kids to play in the Kidz Zone area and Louisville Bats tickets for each family that attends.   All students 18 and under will receive a free lunch starting at 10:00 a.m. All students 16 years of age and younger, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this event. The event is sponsored by South Jefferson Neighborhood Place, eight area Jefferson County Public Schools, The Kidz Club and Valley View Church. Aug. 2, Back to School Bash at Farnsley Middle School, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Located at 3400 Lees Ln. Call 485-6810 for more information. Free school supplies, community resources, door prizes and food. Children must be present to receive backpacks filled with school supplies. Sponsored by the Family Resource and Youth Services Center, Farnsley Community School Program, Cane Run Neighborhood Place and Shively Area Ministries. Aug.  2, Back to School Fest 2014 at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 1501 Rangeland Rd.   Call 962-3160 for more information.  This collaborative annual event will offer free backpacks and school supplies as well as great resources including a bus finder, health information and sports physicals ($20).  Sponsored by Family Resources Youth Service Centers and First Neighborhood Place. Aug. 2, School Supply Give-Away at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 1 p.m. Located at 3610 Bohn Ave. in the parking area. Call 485-6710 for more information. School supply give-away at 1 p.m. during the Villages of Park DuValle Annual Resident Community Festival on Sat. Aug. 2 nd (festival is between 12 – 4 p.m.) Aug. 2, Back to School Event at Meyzeek Middle School, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 828 S. Jackson St. Call 485-8299 for more information. This Back to School event will provide school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis and offer parents the opportunity to interact with other community agencies. All children must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian (note: children accompanied by their daycare provider will not be eligible to receive supplies). Offered in partnership with 810 Barret Neighborhood Place.  Aug. 4, Back to School Event at Baxter Community Center, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 1125 Cedar St. Call 574-2670 for more information.  This Back to School event will provide school supplies on first-come, first-served basis and offer parents the opportunity to interact with other community agencies.  Students must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. Offered in partnership with 810 Barret Neighborhood Place.  Aug. 7, NorthWest Neighborhood Place Back to School Festival, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Located at 4018 West Market St.  Call 485-7230 for more information. This free event provides school supplies, a wealth of community/educational resources, door prizes and a fun-filled ‘safe play’ area guided by the Kidz Club.  Students must be in attendance and accompanied by a parent or guardian at this event. Sponsored by NorthWest Neighborhood Place, Jefferson County Public Schools, Service for Peace and the Kidz Club.  Aug. 8, Back to School Festival at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 9 a.m. – noon Located at 1411 Algonquin Pkwy. Call 634-5060 for more information. Families will have an opportunity to receive school supplies as well visit many other partners and vendors who provide additional services to the community. All students grades K-12 are welcome; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this event. The event is sponsored by the collaborative partners (JCPS/CS/HA/CHFS/P&P/PACT/Health Dept./UK-TAP/3C’s) at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, as well as other agencies who will be in attendance. Aug. 9, Back to School Health Fair at South Central Neighborhood Place, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Located at 4255 Hazelwood Ave.   Call 485-7130 or 485-8192 for more information.  All incoming JCPS students and families are invited to this free health fair with great vendors and resources including Visionworks, Kids Dentistry, hearing screens, Norton Healthcare, Ages and Stages and much more. Families will also enjoy fun activities with the YMCA and great music. This event is sponsored by the South Central Neighborhood Place and three area Jefferson County Public Schools.
