Louisville Montessori School Doubles Enrollment

The Montessori School of Louisville has seen increased interest over the past year, says head of schools Gregory Dixon.

The small program located in Louisville's East End has more than doubled its enrollment to 130 students this year. Dixon says the school has added two classrooms, there are  waiting lists for some programs and he’s been pushed out of his office to make more space.“Montessori is growing. Montessori movement is growing in North America and the states and specifically in Louisville right now," he says.Officials with the American Montessori Society tell WFPL enrollement with their organization has seen an increase in membership, but say its hard to determine the growth in student enrollment around the country. Further, they add it's unusual for a Montessori school to grow at the rate of Louisville's school.Montessori education is an approach that combines grade levels in the same classroom and uses hands-on learning techniques to teach students. Dixon says the school is free of academic testing that public schools are held to.“We have a lot of parents who approach use from either other public Montessori schools or just in interest of this particular school and said I wish we could see more of this education happening abound," he says.Jefferson County Public Schools has three of its own Montessori programs that use similar techniques. They include Westport Middle School and Coleridge and Kennedy elementary schools.Westport principal Staci Eddleman says she’s also seen more interest from families.
