Louisville Outskirts Festival Stages Benefit Show for Women's Music

Courtney B Hall LightWitch.com

Before the inaugural Louisville Outskirts Festival can open in October, the organizers need to raise some money. If you look at the sponsor lists of established music festivals, you'll see major brands spending serious dollars. (Did you see who just went on at the Sony / Red Bull / Whole Foods stage?) The list of Outskirts sponsors and partners, so far, is small, local and niche: the Louisville outpost of Guestroom Records; The New Vintage and Dreamland, both independent performance venues; music blog The Other Side of Life. A start-up festival run by volunteers, established as a nonprofit project, and programmed specifically to highlight female-identifying musicians is more than likely going to have to go grassroots to put on their first major event. So the organizers are doing what they do well - they're putting on a show. The second Outskirts benefit show is Saturday at Dreamland (810 E. Market Street). The show features Boston-based dreamfolk singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler, Louisville's Dane Waters and TALsounds (AKA Chicago-based experimental musician Natalie Chami). Outskirts co-founder Carrie Neumayer says these artists lean toward "the heavy, ethereal, experimental and unconventional side of music-making." Here's Nadler with "Dead City Emily," the haunting single from her new album "July" (Sacred Bones Records). Show starts at 8 p.m. and all ages are welcome. More information, including advance ticket info, over at their website.
