AT&T Says Service Has Been Restored in Kentucky

Update 10 p.m.: Service Restored
A spokeswoman for AT&T says service has been restored in Kentucky and throughout the Southeast after an outage that lasted much of Tuesday afternoon and evening. The outage affected cellular and Internet customers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and other parts of the Southeast.

The company said the outage was due to a hardware issue but did not provide further details.

Earlier: AT&T says an outage on Tuesday has affected cell phone and Internet customers in Kentucky and other parts of the Southeast.

The online service downdetector.com shows outages for the company also covering parts of Tennessee and Alabama:

"Engineers have pinpointed a hardware-related issue and are working to restore service as quickly as possible," AT&T spokeswoman Cathy Lewandowski told WFPL. She declined to provide a timeline for a fix.

In a news briefing, a Louisville MetroSafe official said AT&T customers should be mindful of the outage if they need to make emergency calls. The agency has not seen a disruption in its services, the official said.

"MetroSafe is assisting community partners, local law enforcement agencies and some regional 911 centers with either answering assistance or re-direction of emergency calls to other agencies," the agency later said in a statement. "These redirects are a part of normal emergency response procedures."

Users on social media in Louisville also reported outages from Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Tuesday afternoon.
