Mayor Greg Fischer on Monday issued a letter to Louisville Metro Police days after the head of the local Fraternal Order of Police stirred controversy with another letter about some residents’ criticism of the department.
Last week, Sgt. David Mutchler, the FOP president, wrote a response to critics of the department. In the letter, Mutchler wrote: “To the sensationalists, liars and race-baiters—we are done with you. Consider yourselves on notice.” Many perceived the letter as threatening, leading Fischer and Chief Steve Conrad to issue a joint statement criticizing it.
On Monday in a letter to police, Fischer added:
“For many, it was hard not to interpret Mr. Mutchler’s letter as threatening. While he said that was not his intention, he used language that made many people fearful and defensive. Furthermore, some of his statements have the potential to undue (sic) years of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s work to develop thoughtful and constructive relationships with community members.”
The full letter is posted below.
A protest against Mutchler’s letter was on-going Monday afternoon in downtown Louisville. WFPL’s Jacob Ryan is cover the protest.
