Merger – Then, Now and What’s Next

As Louisville prepares to elect a new mayor, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the Louisville/Jefferson County merger. First proposed in 1956 (yes, 1956) then again in 1982 and 1983, Louisville became the nation's 16th largest city with the completion of merger in 2003. Here lately there seems to be quite a bit of talk about "inside" and "outside" the Watterson Expressway or the "Urban Services District" versus the suburbs. So what was the promise of merger, what were the potential drawbacks and how are we doing now? Join us on Tuesday for a discussion on merger as part of the WFPL Next Louisville initiative.
