Last night, I visited Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange to see this year's Shakespeare Behind Bars production. I've followed the work of the company for years, but this was my first time visiting the prison for an actual production.

A Kentucky State Police spokesman says it appears more than one person was involved in the ambush slaying of a Bardstown police officer.

State police Master Trooper Norman Chaffins said today  that based on circumstances, investigators believe more than one person had a hand in the slaying of Officer Jason Ellis. The 33-year-old K-9 officer was gunned down on May 25 after he got out of his cruiser to pick up tree limbs on a highway exit ramp.

Chaffins said police have interviewed a woman who drove around the trap before Ellis stopped.

About two dozen African American pastors on Tuesday called for Jefferson County Public Schools and the Jefferson County Teachers to open ongoing contract negotiations to the public.

The pastors also called for the new contract to allow principals more leeway to dismiss underperforming teachers, students more access to teachers before and after school hours and for struggling students to be paired with more experienced teachers.

Kentucky Shakespeare Festival opens its 54th free Shakespeare in Central Park season this week with a Celtic-themed production of “Twelfth Night.” Directed by producing artistic director Brantley Dunaway, the romantic comedy features the adventures of  heroine Viola, who disguises herself as a man (Cesario) when she’s rescued from a shipwreck and separated from her twin brother. She goes to work for a Duke, who asks her to intervene on his behalf with his romantic interest, who falls for Viola in disguise instead.

Democrat John Yarmuth will seek a fifth term as Kentucky's Third District Congressman in 2014.

The lone Democrat in Kentucky's 8-member federal delegation, Yarmuth's position has been elevated as a point person for the White House on federal appointments. And he is currently a member of the bipartisan work group that is crafting a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the House.

In a message to supporters on Tuesday, Yarmuth says it was important to make an official decision long before the January filing deadline.

"Representing the people of Louisville is the best job I could ever hope for," he says. "Hearing from our community and fighting for our priorities continues to drive me as it did from day one, and I have no intention of stopping anytime soon."

Earlier this year, the Yarmuth campaign dismissed speculation that a sparse first quarter fundraising report was a sign of retirement.

The Indiana Supreme Court has upheld fines levied by state House Republicans on Democrats for their legislative walkouts over a labor bill.

In 2011, Indiana House Democrats fled to Illinois to protest a right-to-work bill that also brought union demonstrators into the House gallery, and staged another, shorter walkout in 2012, the year the bill was passed. 

House Speaker Brian Bosma levied thousands of dollars in fines against the Democrats for their absence.
