Louisvillians Plan Rally for Trayvon Martin Sunday

  Several dozen Louisville residents are planning a rally for Sunday afternoon to respond to yesterday's ruling in the trial of George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was acquitted Saturday of "all charges in the 2012 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a scuffle in a gated Florida community."

Commentary | Louisville's Crumbling Eastern Cemetery Desperate for Attention, Care

It was around 11 in the morning a few weeks ago that Joel Berndt and I picked through the bushes in Eastern Cemetery. Neighbors complain about pests that come from the cemetery’s overgrowth. When we cut away branches and bramble, there’s a 50/50 chance that we’ll either find trash left from somebody’s party or a headstone that’s been damaged or vandalized. We had a trash bag full of empty six packs, candy wrappers, crushed cigarette packs and bike parts.

What Are Louisvillians Saying They Want for the City?

When Metro Government first began collecting public input on the city's 25-year plan, dubbed Vision Louisville, the Mayor's spokesman said suggestions about public transit (light rail, better bus service) were among the most popular.

Based on the suggestions the city has collected online, that seems to be the case.

Forecastle Fest Temporarily Evacuated Due to Impending Severe Weather

UPDATE 5:24pm: Forecastle Festivalgoers are being allowed to re-enter Waterfront Park, after a 20 minute evacuation due to a severe storm in the vicinity. The festival said via social media that it would release an updated schedule for tonight's shows soon.

Original post: Severe thunderstorms in the vicinity caused the organizers of this weekend's Forecastle Festival to temporarily evacuate the music festival's venue at Waterfront Park.

Jefferson County Teachers Association Members Ratify New 5-Year Contract

Jefferson County Teachers Association members have ratified a new five-year contract with the school district, which includes no cost-of-living pay increases next year and gives principals more flexibility in hiring.

The JCTA asked its over 6,000 members to vote over the past week and union officials now say 84 percent approve of the contract.

U of L President James Ramsey Rejects Higher Pay Raise, Trustees Approve 4 Percent Increase

The University of Louisville Board of Trustees approved a 4 percent pay raise Friday for President James Ramsey, who rejected a higher raise recommended by the compensation committee this week.

Trustees’ Vice Chair Robert Hughes says Ramsey voluntarily rejected a 6 percent raise, despite meeting all but one of the 50 goals set by the board and the U of L Foundation--the school's private funding arm that supports around half of Ramsey's salary.

Indiana BMV to Credit Motorists for License Overcharges

Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles says motorists the agency charged too much for driver's licenses will receive credit for the amount they were overcharged.

BMV Commissioner R. Scott Waddell said Friday in a statement that the agency will "immediately" credit motorists' accounts with the department for the amount they were overcharged.

He says the BMV believes it's "important to return the overcharge directly to those who have been impacted" in light of what he called the "recently discovered overcharge."
