Louisville Council Democrats Reprimand Johnson Aide For Disparaging Council Member

The Louisville Metro Council Democratic Caucus has reprimanded an aide to Caucus Vice Chair Dan Johnson for making disparaging comments about a council member, according to documents obtained by WFPL.

The memorandum, issued June 24, said Johnson must provide a corrective plan for legislative aide Bryan Mathews to follow.

For more than a decade, U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, R-Kentucky,  owned a $200,000-piece of West Virginia property with a lobbyist whose clients and employers had business before him in Congress, writes R.G. Dunlop, a reporter from WFPL's Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.

Dunlop spent three months delving into Whitfield's relationship with a well-known, national lobbyist and discovered the pair had a longstanding financial partnership.

 The ballot for the Jefferson County Board of Education's 3rd District election is beginning to take shape.

Jan Scholtz, a Louisville realtor, will seek to fill Debbie Wesslund’s seat. Wesslund announced earlier this year she would not be seeking reelection.

Report: GE Considers Selling Its Louisville-Based Appliance Business

General Electric is once again looking sell its Louisville-based appliance business, according to a report today by Bloomberg.

Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg reports that GE is in talks with potential acquirers about selling the Appliances and Lighting division.

Kentucky Independent Ed Marksberry Ends U.S. Senate Bid

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Ed Marksberry is ending his effort to be on the Kentucky ballot this fall.

In a Thursday announcement, Marksberry, an Owensboro contractor, said he will stop collecting the needed signatures to run as an independent against Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes and Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell.

Citing health problems, Marksberry said he doesn't have the energy to continue and also lacks the funds to hire a team to get the required 5,000 signatures before the Aug. 12 filing deadline.

Yarmuth Leads Democratic Effort to Craft an 'Action Plan' Ahead of Fall Election

Congressman John Yarmuth of Louisville is spearheading a 100-day action plan that Democrats hope will provide a push to regain the House this fall.

The legislative package unveiled by House Democratic leaders Wednesday emphasizes the middle-class and calls out the Republicans' record of accomplishment.

Among the ideas being pushed are raising the minimum wage, increased infrastructure spending, and creating tax incentives for U.S. companies operating in the country.

NEA Awards Louisville Grant to Start Artists-in-Corporate-Residence Program

Louisville’s contemporary art chamber of commerce is starting an artist-in-corporate-residence program.  The National Endowment for the Arts awarded IDEAS 40203 a $50,000 Our Town Grant to place artists on project teams inside Louisville-based businesses. 

The grant will help provide seed money to fund the residency program, which will place seven artists on six-week commitments over the course of a year. The program will also seek financial contributions from the businesses benefiting from the program.

Pro-McConnell Super PAC Raises $423,700 Over Three Months—But None From Kentucky

The super PAC supporting Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has once again filed a campaign finance report showing no donations from Kentuckians.

Founded by former McConnell campaign aide Scott Jennings, Kentuckians for Strong Leadership reported Wednesday it had raised just over $423,700 in the past three months.

Unlike a candidate's campaign, federal rules allow super PACs to raise an unlimited amount of money from individuals.

University of Louisville Continues to Fight to Keep Records From Public View

The University of Louisville is still fighting to keep emails, memos and other notes related to a high-profile financial audit cloaked from public view.

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, which has sought these public records for several months, has filed an appeal with the state attorney general.

Attorney General Jack Conway’s office extended the appeal an additional 30 work days in order to obtain more documentation.
