As Parkland Shooting Anniversary Approaches, 14 Homicides in Louisville So Far in 2013

Tomorrow marks a dreary anniversary in Louisville.On the afternoon of May 17, 2012, two men—Craig Bland Jr., 22, and Tyson Mimms, 24—died in a fatal shootout in the Parkland neighborhood. As multiple police officers investigated on the 1000 block of South 32nd St., a second brazen shooting happened yards away. Makeba Lee, 24, died. The woman now accused of murdering her, Cheetara Goldsmith, was shot by a Louisville Metro Police officer.That quickly, the number of homicides in Louisville spiked 21 percent. Louisville Metro Police responded to 14 criminal homicides through May 16, 2012. It was 17 at the end of May 17.The shootings heightened attention to violence in west Louisville and led to a series of steps to address the issue, including the creation of acity safe neighborhoods director. Meanwhile, LMPD created a new unit meant to arrest the city's most violence offenders.So where does Louisville stand with homicides in 2013? It's about the same. To date in 2013, Louisville has has 14 homicides.That number includes a triple homicide in March in the Jacobs neighborhood, off Berry Boulevard. Police believe the victims were also the shooters.Below is a graphic showing where homicides have happened in 2013.
