Photos | Louisville Cardinals Fans Celebrate National Championship, But...

Thousands of fans flooded Cardinal Boulevard after the Louisville Cardinals won the 2013 men's national championship. They screamed, hugged, cheered and screamed some more. Early on, a few minor incidents happened—fireworks were set off in the crowd, a guy climbed a tree, bottles shattered on the ground. But, later, there was an incident in the crowd. Bottles were reportedly tossed at police and officers were reportedly knocked to the ground; officers responded by firing pepper pellets to disperse the crowd, a university spokesman said.More than 7,000 people were estimated to have joined in the celebration at Cardinal Boulevard around the Cardinal Towne development. Here are some images of the scene before the revelry's abrupt end:In total, police made about a dozen arrests throughout the city, a Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman said. Reports included gunshots, disorderly conduct and fights. The largest crowds appeared to be at Cardinal Boulevard, police said.WFPL will update what happened in the celebrations once more information becomes available on Tuesday.Updated: Police made 23 arrests by about 5 a.m., mostly on charges of alcohol intoxication or disorderly conduct, LMPD said. An LMPD officer was injured overnight when a bottle struck him on the head—he was taken to University Hospital  police added.Update 1 p.m.: Here's a little more from a UofL spokesman: We had several officers struck by flying beer bottles. The police went into the crowd after a report of female nudity, but they could not find the young woman. That’s when the two officers were struck, and the police decided to end the event. Reports of police firing paint balls were false. The police did shoot pepper pellets into the ground to disperse the crowd.Update 3 p.m.: LMPD now says 30 people were arrested, but that number is preliminary. As previously planned, LMPD and UofL Police will have about 120 officers on Cardinal Boulevard, Fourth Street Live, the Baxter Avenue/Bardstown Road corridor and western parts of Broadway for tonight's women's national championship game, police say.
