Baylor's Kim Mulkey Suspended 1 Game Following Comments on Upset Loss to Louisville Cardinals

Baylor women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey will besuspended for a post-season game in the future because of comments she made following the Lady Bears' loss to the Louisville Cardinals in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.Baylor was a favorite to winning consecutive national championships going into the women's NCAA Tournament, but were upset by the Louisville Cardinals in the Sweet 16.Following the 82-81 loss, Mulkey said: “I thought the game started out way too physical, way too physical. I thought that all three of them, if they go past this round of officiating, it will be sad for the game.”That's no good, the NCAA said.Mulkey's suspension will be for her next postseason game, regardless of where she's coaching. The NCAA is also withholding Baylor's "team championship per diem during the regional round of play." In announcing Mulkey's suspension, Carolayne Henry, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee said: “The committee unanimously felt that the behavior of Coach Mulkey was unacceptable and has no place in the women’s basketball championship."Soon after the game, Cardinals coach Jeff Walz discussed Mulkey's comments (among other things) in an interview with WFPL. He said:"They have won 74, 75 games. So it'd been a long time since she actually lost a basketball game. I'm just not sure she handled it extremely well. She might not have liked the physicality of it, but we were never trying to hurt anybody—we were just trying to do what we need to do to win within the rules."Baylor finished the season 34-2.The Cardinals, a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, lost in thenational championship game to UConn.
