Cardinals, Wildcats to Battle for Governor's Cup, Football Bragging Rights

In college football, the annual battle for the Governor’s Cup moves to Lexington as the Louisville Cardinals take on the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday.

U of L is 2-0, with victories over Ohio University and Eastern Kentucky, and is ranked seventh in the country.      This will be the Cards’ first road game of the season.

Kentucky lost its season opener to Western Kentucky but bounced back last week with a victory over Miami (Ohio), the first for new coach Mark Stoops.

Cards’ coach Charlie Strong says he appreciates the importance of the in-state rivalry, but the season can’t be defined by a single game.

"I think the fans are more into it than anyone, because they’re the ones talking about ‘you only need to win one game,’" Strong said.

"Well, I want to win them all, I’m not just trying to win one.   They’re the ones that really get into it, ‘just beat Kentucky.’    There’s  a lot of teams on our schedule but we understand what’s at stake."

Kickoff at Commonwealth Stadium is at noon.

Indiana returns to action Saturday in Bloomington, taking on Bowling Green.
