College Basketball: U of L Prepares for Inaugural AAC Tournament
The Louisville Cardinals open play Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament in Memphis.
U of L will face Rutgers in the 3:00pm game. The Scarlet Knights defeated South Florida in the first round.
Cards coach Rick Pitino says a strong showing this week would boost his team's seeding in the NCAA tournament.
"The thing that’s been impressive is we don’t have a bad loss at all. Now, our strength of schedule hasn’t been overly dynamic but we’re playing very good basketball at the end. I feel very comfortable, I don’t over-exaggerate our worth. I say if we win this tournament we’ll be a two seed (in the NCAA). If we don’t, we’ll be a three or four seed," he said.
This is the first tournament for the AAC, formed last year in a flurry of conference realignments. U of L will join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.
The Indiana Hoosiers take on Illinois Thursday at noon in the first round of the Big 10 tournament in Indianapolis.
The Kentucky Wildcats will face either Alabama or LSU Friday night in the Southeastern Conference tournament in Atlanta.
Western Kentucky opens play in the Sun Belt tournament Saturday in New Orleans.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels won their conference tournament last weekend and an automatic NCAA bid.
