Eastern Kentucky School District Considers Arming Principals

MCKEE, Ky. — An eastern Kentucky school district is considering a proposal to deputize and arm principals for added safety.

WYMT-TV reported that Jackson County Public Schools released a statement saying officials are reviewing the proposal, consulting with the district's attorney and its insurance carrier.

The suggestion came last month from Jackson County Sheriff Denny Payman, who said he could train and deputize principals. He says if an intruder entered a school, he and his deputies couldn't get there before somebody got hurt.

Payman says "that's the best way to protect our children."

It was unclear when the board might make a decision on the proposal.
