Efforts Continue to Address Propane Shortage
Government officials and suppliers say they’re continuing efforts to help ease the region’s propane shortage.
Demand and prices for the heating gas have soared as temperatures have plummeted. Supplies were already affected by a record harvest that required farmers to dry large amounts of grain.
Midwestern states are the hardest hit by the shortage, but many Kentucky homes have been in short supply as well.
Last week, Attorney General Jack Conway obtained a court order requiring Paducah-based United Propane Gas to allow customers to buy propane from other companies.
Company president Eric Small says they’ve been doing everything possible to satisfy demand.
"We realized early on that we were struggling and we notified our biggest customers that they have our permission to get gas from wherever they could if we were not able to satisfy whatever needs they had. But we did that well before the AG even got involved," Small said.
Officials in Indiana and other state s have eased propane hauling restrictions for truckers in order to get more gas delivered to customers.
