Former State Rep. DeWayne Bunch Dies

Former Republican state representative DeWayne Bunch has died from head injuries sustained last year.

Bunch was a first term lawmaker when he was injured breaking up a fight at Whitley County High School, where he was a teacher. He went through months of surgeries and recovery in Lexington and in Atlanta.

His wife, Regina Bunch, was elected in a special election to succeed him as state representative. She’s currently still serving in that capacity.

Leaders of both the Democratic and Republican caucus in the state House praised Bunch’s service as a lawmaker.

"On behalf of the Kentucky House, I want to extend condolences to the Bunch family during this difficult time and want them to know they are in our thoughts and prayers," House Speaker Greg Stumbo said in a statement.  "DeWayne showed tremendous potential as a legislator, and his wife Regina has done an outstanding job in serving the remainder of his term.”

House Republican leader Jeff Hoover praised Bunch's tenure as a lawmaker.

“Dewayne truly represented someone who is committed to serving the public, whether it be as a school teacher, a member of the armed services, his church, and his neighbors.  It was that caring commitment and dedication to the people of Whitley County that prompted him to run and win election as State Representative."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Regina, her family and all those who knew and loved Dewayne as they deal with his passing.  The family has requested privacy during these difficult times, and when the memorial arrangements have been completed they will be made available to the public and press,” Hoover says.

Funeral arrangements for Bunch have yet to be finalized.
