George McGovern Discussing Hunter S. Thompson on WFPL

In 2009, George McGovern came to Louisville to discuss his latest book, Abraham Lincoln. I interviewed him ahead of his visit and couldn't help but ask about his encounters with Hunter S. Thompson. Most of my first impressions of McGovern came from Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972, and since McGovern was coming to Thompson's hometown, I figured it was appropriate to ask.  That was a great book. I think it was Hunter Thompson's most important book. He, from the very beginning, covered me very closely. He followed me everywhere. He was the first nationally-known journalist who came to the conclusion I was going to win the Democratic presidential nomination...I love the guy. He was brilliant about three or four days a week and he was slightly crazy the other three or four days. I suspect drugs or booze had something to do with that.
