Governor's School for the Arts Moves to Centre College

The Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts will move its three-week summer studio arts program to Danville’s Centre College campus next year. GSA has made Transylvania University in Lexington its summer residency home for fourteen years. Because GSA has is an agency of Kentucky’s Tourism, Arts, and Heritage cabinet, the state requires the organization to issue a request for proposals to host their summer campus every three years. This year, Transy elected not to compete because of increasing demands on space and facilities for its own summer classes. GSA executive director Carrie Nath says Centre College’s Danville campus offers the right amount of studio space for the program’s nine art disciplines, with room to grow.“We’re very multidisciplinary at GSA as well, and so the community around Centre, the Danville community, is opening its doors to us to make growth possible, in addition to what Centre can do,” she says.Nath also praises Centre's facilities, including the Norton Center for the Arts and the Jones Visual Art Center, which have the capacity to accommodate  classes, rehearsals and visiting artist performance space needs for the program's nine art disciplines. “So they’re able to accommodate space-wise, technically, and at such a high technical level and performance level all of the needs of the program," says Nath. "It is a very demanding program space-wise.” GSA is a free, competitive, audition-based summer studio art program for rising Kentucky high school juniors and seniors. Students audition to study dance, drama, musical theater, visual art, creative writing, vocal and instrumental music, architecture or new media for three weeks in the summer. Applications are due in December, and auditions are held every spring across the state. (Note: Erin Keane is also a graduate of GSA.)
