JCPS Has Received 15 Commitment Letters From 'School of Innovation' Designers So Far

Officials say they’ve received 15 letters of intent so far from groups or individuals who want to design the next Jefferson County public school.

The district announced its School of Innovation Design Competition last month, which allows anyone to submit ideas that JCPS staff could potentially help become a reality.Ideas should be bold and challengewhat a public school looks like, officials said. The school will still be held accountable to the Kentucky Department of Education, so ideas like no standardized tests might not fly. Most everything else is on the table.JCPS director of student assignment Jonathan Lowe says applicants so far include teams of JCPS teachers, private school teachers, education organizations and community members.“I’m very pleased with thinking about 15-25 strong applications. The folks that have been submitting them so far appear to be very credible and are going to be submitting serious proposals," he says.At this point groups or individuals just need to say they’re interested in participating and don’t need to give specifics, but several have expressed interest to Lowe with ideas that include more technology or project-based learning, he says.“I think there are going to be things that are connected to making sure that kids are college and career ready. There’s interest potentially in connecting into the arts in a different way,” he adds. The district will narrow the pool and the school board will vote on the best ideas next year. Officials say the winning idea could be implemented as early as the fall of 2015.Proposals are due next Tuesday.
