Keeneland Wraps Up 'Phenomenal' Yearling Sale
Officials at Keeneland Race Course say the just-completed fall yearling sale was the most successful since before the recession.
Gross sales during its 12 days totalled more than $280 million, up more than 27 percent over last year.
“After 2008, there were a lot of people thinking of getting out of the horse business. They had lack of credit. They had problems with their banks. Now, all of sudden, they’ve weathered that storm and hopefully see a brighter horizon,” said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s Director of Sales.
Russell says this year’s sales were aided by a new format, and a relatively mild summer helped ease some the stress on young horses.
He says breeders from Kentucky and other parts of the country brought what a ‘superior group of athletes’ to the auction ring.
