Listen | Kyle Coma-Thompson Reads 'From Anna'

Louisville writer Kyle Coma-Thompson’s first book is out. His collection of short stories, “The Lucky Body,” was published in December by Seattle’s Dock Street Press. Coma-Thompson is a former Axton Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Louisville. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in writing at the University of Virginia, and began his creative writing studies as an undergraduate studying with Nikky Finney at the University of Kentucky. In Coma-Thompson's story "From Anna," a woman tells her companion a story about startling discoveries about an ancient culture while they watch a televised Ultimate Fighting match in a hotel room:"Next, we’re told, two women, Zoltana Spruce and Pam Hollander-Johnson, will meet for their third match in as many years. A close-up before a commercial catches Zoltana chewing her mouthpiece; it might as well have been a human ear. Soon they’ll beat each other half dead and it’s almost certain we’ll laugh."Coma-Thompson visited WFPL’s studio this week to read from the book. Here he is reading "From Anna."
