LMAS: Holidays Bring Surge in People Giving Up Pets

Louisville Metro Animal Services says the financial and other stresses of the holiday season can lead some pet owners to surrender their animals to shelters.

Senior Manager Margaret Brosko says LMAS has seen an increase in recent years in the number of owners turning in their pets around the holiday season.

She says they should think twice before giving them up.

"I think that once people realize how much their pet means to them, the unconditional love that their pet gives them on a daily basis and that there are means to help them out there, then hopefully they’ll reconsider," she said.

Brosko says there are resources available to help pet owners get through difficult times.

The Kentucky Humane Society offers a free Pet Help Line to assist with questions about behavior or anything else pet-related.   Free pet food is also provided to those in need.
