Milton-Madison Bridge Replacement Entering Final Stages
Construction of a new Ohio River bridge linking Milton, Ky., and Madison, Ind., is entering its final stages.
Andrea Clifford with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says starting today or tomorrow, traffic will be rerouted onto the new bridge, which is being built on temporary piers alongside the old span.
"Once the traffic is switched onto the new bridge, the old steel truss will be removed and then they will strengthen and widen the tops of the existing piers. The final stage is to slide the new steel truss onto the existing refurbished piers," Clifford said.
Clifford says the new truss is scheduled to be moved in August. This construction method has allowed the old bridge to stay open during much of the process.
Clifford say the weight limit for vehicles has been increased from three to 15 tons, but tractor-trailers still cannot cross the bridge until the project is complete.
The Milton-Madison Bridge project began more than two years ago.
