With the NCAA's Top Seed, Pitino's Cards Set Sights on Next Goal
University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says his team has worked hard to earn its top overall seed in the NCAA tournament, but the Cards are not dwelling on the designation.
Pitino says its one of many steps toward the ultimate goal of winning a national championship.
"When we lost three in a row, we set goals. We set regular season goals, we set tournament goals, we set seeding goals. Now you go on to your next goal. Until it ends, you just keep putting forth goals to your basketball team," Pitino said today.
Some national analysts are picking the Cards to win the title, but Pitino says the NCAA field is so strong that it’s too early for anyone to predict a winner.
"It's crazy out there, prognostication means nothing. Take your pick--flip a coin, you'd be better off," he said.
U of L opens play Thursday in Lexington against North Carolina A&T, which defeated Liberty 73-72 Tuesday night in a play-in game in Dayton, Ohio.
Western Kentucky and Indiana will play their respective openers Friday.
