New Louisville Music Venue to be Called Mercury Ballroom

A new music venue planned for South Fourth Street in Louisville now has a name.

The Mercury Ballroom is scheduled to open in April of next year.

It will be housed in the renovated Wright-Taylor Building near Fourth and Chestnut.   The venue is owned by Live Nation, which also operates the Louisville Palace just to the south.

Spokeswoman Sydney O’Bryan says several names were considered before they settled on Mercury.  She says it’s a versatile name;  some associate it with the planet closest to the sun or the first U.S. manned space flight, and others with the chemical element.

"Mercury originally received its name from Roman mythology.  And it was named after the swift messenger of the gods, which was called Quicksilver.  So we’d like to see Mercury Ballroom as serving as the swift messenger  of music to the Louisville community," she said.

The Mercury Ballroom complex will include a 900-seat concert hall and space for other events.

O’Bryan says the first lineup of performers will be announced next month.
