Nine Dead in Muhlenberg Co. House Fire; Cause Ruled Accidental

Investigators say a malfunctioning electric baseboard heater caused an early morning fire in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky early today that claimed the lives of nine family members, eight of them children.

The blaze broke out around 2:00am at a home in the small town of Depoy, just outside of Greenville.

It claimed the lives of 36 year old LaRae Watson and eight of her nine children, ages four to fifteen.

The children’s father, 36 year old Chad Watson, and their 11 year old sibling, Kylie Watson are hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.   The father was in critical but stable condition;  the child was in stable condition.

The tragedy has shaken the small western Kentucky community.

"My wife and I would walk around the block every so often during the summer.  Invited (the children) to Bible school last summer.   Good people,” said Clarence Humphrey, a neighbor of the Watson family.

A local bank has set up a fund to help cover the family’s funeral expenses.
