O'Neill Seeking Derby Repeat With Goldencents

Trainer Doug O’Neill will join some elite company if Goldencents wins the Kentucky Derby tomorrow.

O’Neill  is trying to become just the seventh trainer to win back-to-back Derbys.

Last year, he trained I’ll Have Another to victories in the Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Goldencents will break from the number eight post, which came as a relief to O’Neill  as he watched this week’s post position draw.

"I was nervous," he said.  " Every time I called a number and it wasn’t us, I kept thinking, ‘that one is still in there,’ and I didn’t really want that.     Even though I would have justified it, it would have been okay.   But I didn’t really want that.   I’m just very excited about eight and excited about our chances."

The last trainer to win consecutive Derbys was Bob Baffert in 1997 and ’98.

Goldencents was the third favorite choice in the early oddsmaking.

The morning line Derby favorite is Orb, followed by Verrazano.
