Pence to Address Indiana Lawmakers This Week
Indiana’s new governor will deliver his State of the State address to lawmakers this week.
Governor Mike Pence is expected to reiterate his call for a ten-percent cut in the state income tax and urge lawmakers to approve other elements of his budget proposal, which includes a one-percent increase in education spending and modest hikes for other programs.
But House Speaker and fellow Republican Brian Bosma said last week that lawmakers in his chamber are more inclined to fully restore education funding that was cut significantly during the recession, and that would make it difficult to pay for Pence’s proposed tax cut. Bosma added, though, that a tax cut is not off the table.
Pence will deliver his speech to the House and Senate Tuesday at 7:00pm.
House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath and Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane will hold a press event right after the address to offer their response.
