Rupp Arena Overhaul Plans Unveiled
Officials have announced details of a planned $300 million "reinvention" of Lexington’s Rupp Arena.
The design includes a new adjoining convention center, a transparent facade chair-back seats throughout the arena.
Governor Steve Beshear is recommending $65 million in state-issued bonds to help fund the project. Full financing has not been worked out yet.
Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says that’s not a concern.
"There’s always questions on a project like this about funding, but let’s think where we are today and where we were three years ago. This project was conceived and imagined three years ago. Today, we have a design, we have a cost. We know that cost is within what was predicted, two and a half years ago, three years ago when we started the project,” Gray said.
Voters could be asked to approve a one percent sales tax to help pay for the project if authorized by the legislature.
Gray says work could begin in 2015 with completion as early as 2017. UK basketball games are scheduled to go on in Rupp during the upgrade.
