Team Mitch Ad Mocks Democratic Candidate Search

In the first ad of the 2014 Kentucky Senate race, Republican Mitch McConnell pokes fun at Democrats for being unable to find an opponent for the general election. The online spot utilizes clips of President Obama, and shows him looking at a number of rumored challengers including actress Ashley Judd, former U.S. Ambassador Matthew Barzun and Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes. It also notes how a number of prominent Democrats in the state have said flat out they are not interested in taking on McConnell in 2014.Watch:Even though the attacks are laced with humor, the ad shows Team Mitch has done its fair share of research on Judd, Grimes and Barzun. In many ways, the spot is vintage McConnell, who has always tried to mix humor and jabs in his attacks since running for U.S. Senate in 1984.   McConnell's campaign hopes that the parody will show the difficulty Democrats in Kentucky and Washington have had trying to recruit a serious contender.   "We all know President Obama and his liberal allies have made Senator McConnell their number one target," McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said in a news release. "We thought we would have a little fun with the problems they’ve been had finding someone to carry President Obama’s banner in Kentucky."   Thus far only Owensboro contractor Ed Marksberry has announced his intentions to run.
