Unbound: Frank Bill and Jamieson Ridenhour on 'Car Trouble'

In each episode of Unbound, we hear stories from two different authors on a theme. Today’s episode is about car trouble. Americans love their cars—the romance of the open road and the freedom to go any direction we can point our wheels. Unfortunately, they don’t always take us where we want to go.We'll hear Frank Bill reading his story "Life of Salvage," about a couple of Southern Indiana scrap metal traders whose ride breaks down on their way to the salvage lot. Then we'll travel to a roadside gas station where a newly-single guy with little but a car to his name sees a woman—is she drugged? is she okay?—in a strange traveler's back seat. That's Jamieson Ridenhour's "Grand Prix." Today's authors: Frank Bill is the author of the story collection Crimes in Southern Indiana (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), one of GQ's favorite books of 2011 and Daily Beast best debut of the year. His new novel from FSG Originals is Donnybrook, about a three-day bare-knuckles fight tournament and a cast of explosive characters desperate for the redemption (and cash) the Donnybrook offers. Bill lives and writes in Southern Indiana.Jamieson Ridenhour is the author of the werewolf murder/mystery novel Barking Mad: A Reginald Spiffington Mystery (Typecast Publishing). He is the creator of the  short fairy-tale horror films Cornerboys and The House of the Yaga, as well as the editor of the Valancourt edition of J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla. His fiction and poetry have appeared in Strange Horizons, Weird Tales and The Lumberyard, among others. A North Carolina native, Ridenhour lives in Bismarck, N.D. The second episode of Unbound airs at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It features Justin Torres and Holly Goddard Jones.
