Work Begins For New Greater Clark Superintendent

Greater Clark County Schools' new superintendent, Dr. Andy Melin, will begin work this week replacing Stephen Daeschner who was hired in 2009 and oversaw significant progress in student achievement.Melin was hired by the board last month after being picked from a pool of local and national candidates. Some board members praised Melin for his ability to pull together different parts of the community to create an academic plan at his previous job leading the Valparaiso Community School District. Now, Melin will begin to do the same for GCCS.“July and August there will be a lot of opportunities for me to get to know our staff and our community," said Melin. The process is likely to take weeks, he said. But through various meetings, and meet and greets with community leaders Melin hopes to get a greater picture of what to expect when school begins in August. “It's really important that by the time I can get through this series of listening sessions we would have spoken with not only all of our internal stakeholders but our external stakeholders, our parents in particular," said Melin. Summer tasks include hiring a new chief financial officer and two new principals for Charlestown middle and high schools. Daeschner's contract renewal  became a major point of contention among the school board. Melin will make $180,000, which is significantly less than his predecessor who was paid nearly $225,000.
