Program Offers Free Training for Moving Van Operators

One-hundred men and women in the Kentuckiana region and along the I-65 corridor will be selected over the next few weeks to participate in moving van operator training.Mayor Greg Fischer joined Congressman John Yarmuth Wednesday in announcing the federally-funded opportunity that will train and provide participants with a Registered American Moving Professional (RAMP) certification.Officials say the moving van industry is becoming more popular, with salaries starting at $40,000 a year plus benefits.Several companies have committed to hiring graduates of the new training program and the goal of training 100 individuals is a conservative estimate, said executive director of KentuckianaWorks, one of several regional partners helping to administer the training."We certainly hope to blow right past that number. The companies in this industry have told us if we double that number and train 200 people by the spring, they'll have jobs for all 200 people," said Gritton. The companies involved in the program include A. Arnold Moving, Armstrong Relocation & Companies – United Van Lines, Coleman American Moving Services, J.K. Moving Services, Margaret’s Moving & Storage and Tri City Van & Storage.Applicants will be screened and those without a commercial driver’s license will receive a scholarship to earn a license after completing the training.Gritton said there are various vendors in the region where a commercial driver's license can be obtained but in general it costs around $4,000 to $5,000 per person for the training. Classes for the three-week certification program begin at Jefferson Community and Technical College in November. For more information on applying visitKentuckianaWorks.org.
