Rumors and Fragile Emotions Lead to Jeffersonville High Student Arrest for Alleged Threats

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings last week, a few reports have surfaced in Kentucky and now in southern Indiana regarding allegations of student threats. On Tuesday, police arrested a Jeffersonville High School student after investigating a rumor circulating around the school system, said Greater Clark County Schools officials. The following are excerpts from a statement released by GCCS. Emotions are fragile after the tragic event last week in Connecticut. Unfortunately, it is not unusual for rumors during these difficult times to circulate. We take all rumors seriously and the district will investigate them thoroughly.  It's also important to understand the individuals creating or spreading these rumors are subject to school discipline and legal ramifications. In fact, a rumor of potential violence has circulated in our school system and, as a result of a strong partnership between school and police officials, the investigation has resulted in a Jeffersonville High School student being arrested.   The student had no intent or means to act violently, but he did inappropriately communicate a rumor using social media.  Although an arrest has been made, the investigation is on-going. The district has  also taken immediate steps to implement a few safety measures that will be noticeable to parents.  You will need to notify your child's school if you plan to visit during the school day and may be asked to present identification to access the building.  Classroom doors will also be closed and locked while teachers are leading their classes.  Camera and buzzer systems controlling visitor access to our buildings should be installed prior to students returning on January 7.
