Slim Majority Of Kentucky Voters Think Kim Davis Should Issue Marriage Licenses

Ryland Barton

A narrow majority of Kentucky voters think Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis should issue marriage licenses, according to the latest Bluegrass Poll released Thursday evening.

Fifty-one percent of registered voters in Kentucky who were surveyed said they disagree with Davis’ decision to not issue licenses, The Herald Leader reports.

Davis took a stand against issuing licenses to same sex couples for religious reasons. Her stand, in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling this summer, temporarily landed her in jail.

The poll found about 42 percent of respondents said they think Davis shouldn’t have to issue licenses. Seven percent said they were not sure.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Nationally, there is less support for Davis’ refusal to administer marriage licenses.

According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll from a few weeks ago,  63 percent of Americans said Davis should be required to furnish licenses.

Providing licenses to marry is currently part of Davis’ duties as a county clerk.

The Bluegrass poll, which surveyed 866 registered Kentucky voters, was commissioned by a group of media companies—including The Herald-Leader, The Courier-Journal, WHAS and WKYT.
