Tea Party Activist Sues Beshear Over Medicaid Expansion

Tea party activist David Adams is again suing Gov. Steve Beshear. This time it's over the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare. The lawsuit aims at stopping Beshear from expanding Medicaid in Kentucky. The governor announced earlier this monththat he'd do just that—a decision that expands healthcare benefits to 308,000 Kentuckians, with the first three years being paid for by the federal government. The state picks up 10 percent of the cost beginning in 2017.Adams' suit challenges a decades-old state law that gives the governor the power to expand Medicaid. He argues that the law gives the governor too much unchecked power over federal money."It's all a big game that the federal government can pay because they can print money," Adams said. "We can't play it because we can't print money, we just go deeper in the hole."Adams said a few dozen people have given money to file this lawsuit and he's still searching for a few more donors."Anything like this, to do it right, winds up to be very expensive," he said. "We continue to go out and sell the effort to people and as they see we are actually on very solid legal ground for asserting consumer and citizens' rights on this, those efforts will just expand."Earlier, Adams sued Beshear to block him from implementing a state-run health insurance exchange. That suit is pending.(Image via Shutterstock)
