21C, Flyover Film Festival to Screen Documentary on Performance Artist Abramovic

When filmmaker Jeff Dupre met legendary performance artist Marina Abramovic at a dinner party a year before her groundbreaking career retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, he had a vague idea of who she was (the artist who once walked the Great Wall of China) and a healthy dose of skepticism about performance art. By the end of the night, Dupre says he was smitten with the legendary artist known for pushing the boundaries of her body as the subject, object and medium of her work.

Painter Explores Advertising Influence in 21C Lecture

The figures in artist Ryan McGinness’ “Women” series are flattened, graphic shapes, calling to mind both a Matisse painting and public signage, compelling in bold color and broad strokes.

“His work is exploring contemporary culture in a really compelling way, drawing on advertising and different kinds of visual iconography that we’re surrounded by, from both fine art and consumer culture,” says 21C Museum Hotel curator Alice Gray Stites.

Ozkaya's 'David' Arrives at 21C

Just in time to welcome Derby guests, 21C Museum Hotel’s over-sized version of Michelangelo’s David was installed on the corner of Main and Seventh streets today. He rolled in on the back of a truck and stood up onto his 8-foot pedestal with the help of a crane. He stands three stories tall, and his gold paint gleams in the bright May sun.

National Book Award Winner Reads at 21C

Lexington poet Nikky Finney has been on the road, visiting 20 cities in three months. It’s her second tour for “Head Off & Split,” her fourth collection of poems that won the National Book Award last fall.

Finney will read in Louisville tonight at 21C Museum Hotel.

Throughout her tour, Finney says she’s heard from people who saw her powerful acceptance speech during the November awards broadcast and went wild.
