Adam Edelen Won't Run For Kentucky Governor, But Says Democrats Must Have a 'Reform Element'

Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen declared Wednesday that he won't run for governor next year.

Edelen, viewed by many as a potential Democratic candidate, cited family reasons as the basis for his decision.

“My wife and my sons were all gung-ho for me to run, but at the end of the day I made the determination that I’d rather spend the next year-and-a-half coaching little league and catching crooks and running for re-election than I would worrying about my name ID in a governor’s race," Edelen told Kentucky Public Radio.

State Auditor Adam Edelen Won't Run for Kentucky Governor

Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen won't be a candidate for governor in 2015.

Political observers considered Edelen a serious contender. He'd made in-roads toward a run for governor, including courting Democratic donors and nailing down a running mate who was never publicly identified.

Edelen released this statement today announcing his decision:

In 2015, I will be a candidate for re-election as State Auditor.

State Audit of Jefferson County Public Schools Resurfaces Many Old Questions

The long-awaited state audit of Jefferson County Public Schools didn't give many surprises to the district's leader—in part because many of the issues were known to staff and are longstanding.

In fact, some of the same questions were raised in a 2011 audit conducted by Phi Delta Kappa, such as the cost of central administrator salaries.

Why do the questions endure?

"You've got to prioritize," says JCPS Superintendent Donna Hargens.

Kentucky State Audit Calls JCPS Administration 'Bloated.' Here Are Some Takeaways.

Jefferson County Public Schools’ management system is  “bloated" and the district isn’t providing teachers with enough classroom resources, according to a a state audit released Wednesday morning.

Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen’s office has completed its year-long report that includes 45 findings and several more recommendations to reform JCPS management and policies, some of which the district has already begun to implement.

Those policies, he said, could shift into classrooms millions of dollars now spent on administration.

Kentucky State Auditor Plans to Contact Mayor Greg Fischer About KFC Yum Center

Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen will soon contact Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to discuss a potential audit of the KFC Yum Center.

The arena recently suffered a downgrade of its debt to junk status.  Louisville Metro Councilman Dan Johnson is calling for an audit.

Auditor's office spokeswoman Stephanie Hoelscher says Edelen will call Fischer about the matter soon.

Former Northern Kentucky Superintendent Pleads Guilty To Embezzling School Funds

A former northern Kentucky superintendent faces up to two years in prison, after pleading guilty in federal court this week to embezzling nearly $200,000 from his school district. 

William “Gary” Rye actually embezzled over $500,000 over several years of leading Dayton Independent Schools, according to Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen.
