Revised RNC Schedule Still Gives Kentuckians Speaking Slots

The schedule shuffling at this year’s Republican National Convention won’t cost any Kentucky politicians their speaking slots.

With the first day’s events canceled due to Tropical Storm (soon to be Hurricane) Isaac, at least two Kentucky speakers were in danger of being knocked off the schedule.

McConnell, Barr To Speak At GOP Convention

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will deliver a speech a speech at this month’s Republican National Convention.

McConnell’s office confirmed to the congressional newspaper The Hill that McConnell will speak on August 29, the third night of the convention in Tampa.

The Republican National Committee previously announced that Kentucky junior Senator Rand Paul will speak on the convention’s opening night August 27.

Kentucky Republicans Land Big Roles at National Convention

Kentucky Republicans are getting high-profile positions at next week's national convention in Tampa, Florida while their Democratic counterparts are either skipping their party's convention or have not been offered speaking slots.

The event is set to begin August 27, and RNC organizers announced Monday that U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is delivering his keynote speech in prime time on the first day of convention. Paul is scheduled to speak around 7:45 p.m.

Paul Endorses Barr in Sixth District Race

U.S. Senator Rand Paul has endorsed Republican Andy Barr in the Sixth District congressional race.

Paul announced the endorsement Monday after a chamber of commerce luncheon in Winchester. Barr is challenging Democratic U.S. Rep Ben Chandler in the Nov. 6 general election. It is the Lexington attorney's second time running against Chandler. Barr lost to Chandler in a squeaker two years ago.

Paul says he supports Barr because he is willing to cut spending.

Congressman Ben Chandler Will Skip Democratic Convention

Congressman Ben Chandler is joining a handful of prominent Democrats who will skip their party's national convention this year. 

Chandler, who represents the Sixth Congressional District in Central Kentucky, is facing Republican Andy Barr in his re-election bid. The matchup is a repeat of the 2010 race in which Chandler beat Barr by fewer than 700 votes. Other Democrats skipping the convention have been criticized for distancing themselves from President Barack Obama, who will be formally nominated for re-election at the event. But Chandler's campaign insists the decision isn't political.

NRCC Makes Early Ad Buy for Barr in Sixth District Race

The national group in charge of getting Republicans elected to Congress is investing $400,000 in Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has purchased television ad time to support Republican Andy Barr’s second challenge against Congressman Ben Chandler this fall. Barr came within 650 votes of defeating Chandler in 2010.
