ELIZABETHTOWN — Phone customers in the 270 area code may use seven or 10-digit dialing starting in August as the region prepares to roll out an additional area code.

The option to use seven or 10 digits runs from Aug. 3 through Jan. 31, 2014, after which customers will be required to dial 10 digits when placing local calls. To dial long distance, callers must add a 1.

Even though use of 10 digits will be required, no additional fees are applied, The Elizabethtown News-Enterprise reports. A local call will remain local.

Western Kentucky to Get 364 Area Code, Ten-Digit Local Dialing

The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved a new area code for western Kentucky.

The new area code, 364, will be added to the current 270 footprint.

PSC Spokesman Andrew Melnykovich say with the overlay, people who currently use 270 won’t have to change numbers, but there will be a different dialing pattern.

"In order to distinguish between the two area codes within the same area, ten-digit dialing with become mandatory for all local calls. That’s similar to what you see in most big cities in the United States today," he said.

"Back in the 1940s and 1950s, Indiana was divided up into three area codes, and 812 is the last of the three original area codes that needs long term relief," Swinger said.
