Flu Still Widespread in Kentucky; Indiana Death Toll is 15

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Kentucky has spent five weeks at its highest level of flu, which is far more than last year. That means more than half of the state’s regions have reported an increased number of cases. Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services spokesperson Gwenda Bond says although this year’s outbreak is more severe than previous years, it is not too out of the ordinary.

Health Department Taking Flu Shot Appointments

Officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control say they don’t anticipate any shortages of flu vaccine this year.

In Louisville, health department spokesman Dave Langdon says appointments are now being taken for flu shots administered at four community sites.

The department recommends a flu shot for everyone six months and older.

Kentucky Confirms Seventh Human West Nile Virus Case

A central Kentucky health official says a case of human West Nile virus has been confirmed in Bourbon County.

Bourbon County Health Department Director Tom Skeen told the Lexington Herald-Leader it's thought that the person contracted the mosquito-borne illness out of state, although he didn't believe it was in Texas.

That state has reported 1,225 cases and 50 deaths as of last week, the largest outbreak in years.  Many of the cases are in the Dallas area.
