Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice: Courthouse Employees are Underpaid

Kentucky court employees earn less money than state workers who do similar jobs in other branches of government—and state Supreme Court Chief Justice John Minton wants the General Assembly to do something about it.

The state's court system ability to attract and keep employees is hurt by the lower wages, Minton said in his annual State of the Judiciary address, this year given in Hopkinsville. Often, the Kentucky circuit, civil and other courts will hire and train employees only to have them leave for better paying jobs in other state entities or at private businesses.

Chief Justice John Minton Rules Out Furloughs, but Warns of More Budget Cuts to Courts

After a year of budget cuts to Kentucky's court system, Chief Justice John Minton said furloughs won't happen in the next year, but he is asking lawmakers to find more money for the state’s judicial branch.

Kentucky's judicial branch will face more cuts in the upcoming fiscal year, though, Minton said in his annual address to the interim judicial committee.

Minton Re-elected Chief Justice

 

Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John Minton has been elected to a second term.

“With this re-election, the justices have expressed their appreciation for the hard work and leadership of Chief Justice Minton,” says Mary C. Noble, deputy chief justice for the Supreme Court in a statement. “We have an unusually close court that works together on all major issues under the guidance of our chief justice.”

In Kentucky, Supreme Court justices are elected by popular vote. The court then appoints its own chief justice.
