Suspects Sought in Churchill Downs Homicide

Louisville Metro Police say they have no suspects in their investigation into a Derby weekend homicide on the Churchill Downs backside. 

The body of 48 year old Adan Fabian Perez was discovered early yesterday morning in a barn. Officials say he lived and worked on the backside as a groom.

LMPD homicide detective Lt. Barry Wilkerson says there are indications that Perez was involved in an altercation, but an autopsy today will determine the exact cause of death.

Churchill Downs Homicide Victim Identified

Louisville Metro Police continue their investigation into the death of a man whose body was found early today in a barn on the Churchill Downs backside.

He’s been identified as 48 year old Adan Fabian Perez of Guatemala, who lived on the backside. A state racing officials tells the Courier-Journal that Perez was a groom at the track.

The death has been ruled a homicide. Police say Perez was apparently involved in an altercation, but an exact cause of death has not been determined. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow.

Believe You Can is the Kentucky Oaks Champion; Napravnik Makes History

Believe You Can has won the 2012 Kentucky Oaks.    

With jockey Rosie Napravnik aboard, the filly finished just ahead of Broadway’s Alibi. Napravnik is the first female to ride a Kentucky Oaks winner.

Grace Hall, the early favorite, was third.

The rain-delayed race was run before 112,552 fans Churchill Downs, the second-largest Oaks crowd.

Stage Is Set For 138th Kentucky Derby

Twenty horses are set to run in tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby.

Three-time Derby winning trainer Bob Baffert has the morning line favorite in this year’s race. Bodemeister, named for Baffert’s son, drew post position six in the crowded gate. 

The second early favorite is Union Rags, trained by Michael Matz (pictured), who’s back with his first serious contender since Derby winner Barbaro in 2006.

“To think I might have a second one, it’s a great opportunity, and it’s a great feeling. It’s what we work for,” he said this week.

Fifteen Fillies Set to Run in 138th Kentucky Oaks

The 138th Kentucky Oaks will be run today at Churchill Downs.

A field of 15 is entered for the fillies-only race.

Grace Hall is the early favorite and will run from post position number two. On Fire Baby and Broadway’s Alibi are co-second choices.

Last year’s Kentucky Oaks drew more than 110,000 fans to the track.

Again this year, Oaks Day will be used as a platform to raise awareness and money for cancers that affect women and their families. For the first time, Churchill Downs has a partnership with the group Stand Up to Cancer.
