Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer Seeks Changes to 'Ban The Box' Ahead of Metro Council Vote

Threatening a veto, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's office is proposing a half dozen exemptions to the ban the box ordinance ahead of Metro Council members voting on the proposal Thursday.

The bill prohibits the city and its private contractors from asking about an applicant's conviction history until it has been determined they're qualified for the job.

But the mayor's office has objected to the ordinance on a number of fronts.

New Faces Join Opposition To Jefferson County School Discipline Practices

A community group opposed to Jefferson County Public Schools’ discipline policies has gained more supporters and plans to meet this week to unify its message to the district.

Officials with the faith-based group Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together, or CLOUT, say suspensions and other discipline in JCPS disproportionately affect African American students.

CLOUT: JCPS Must Fix Racial Gap in Student Punishment

The group Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together (CLOUT) is taking Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens to task over racial disparities in student suspensions and other disciplinary action.

An equity scorecard released by the school district on Monday shows African-American students are more likely to be disciplined than their white classmates in Louisville's public school system.

Report: 92,000 Louisvillians Can't Afford Housing; $450,000 Raised for Trust to Help Them

Leaders with the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund have secured about $500,000, but the fund's advocates are urging Mayor Greg Fischer to do more to secure annual funding.

The trust fund is meant to give grants and loans for affordable housing activities, such as new construction, home rehabilitation, payment assistance and emergency repair.
