Pitino: Former Card Russ Smith Reaches Contract Deal With NBA's Pelicans

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says former Cardinal standout Russ Smith has reached an agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans on his first NBA contract.

Smith was picked 47th in last month’s NBA draft by Philadelphia, but was traded to the Pelicans, who had long been interested in the guard.

"It only takes at the NBA level one team to believe in your talent," Pitino said.    "And we were always convinced that Russ Smith could be an outstanding pro because he can do so many different things."

Alex Poythress, Dakari Johnson Returning to UK Wildcats Next Season

Sophomore forward Alex Poythress and freshman center Dakari Johnson have announced they will return for another season of college basketball with the Kentucky Wildcats.

Poythress and Johnson were key contributors to the Wildcats' NCAA title-game run.    

His postseason performances fueled speculation that he might enter the NBA draft,  but Poythress said in a release that he wanted "to make sure that I'm NBA-ready before I make that jump."

UK's Julius Randle to Enter NBA Draft

University of Kentucky basketball player Julius Randle is leaving the Wildcats after one season to enter the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-9 forward is widely expected to be among the top five picks in the June 26 draft.

Randle led UK in scoring and rebounding during the Wildcats NCAA Tournament run, which ended with a loss to Connecticut in the title game.

UK's Julius Randle to Announce NBA Draft Decision Tuesday

The University of Kentucky basketball program will hold a news conference tomorrow afternoon  with freshman forward Julius Randle, who will announce whether he is entering the NBA draft or returning for another season.         

Sunday is the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft, and the 6-foot-9 Randle has been projected as a lottery pick if he turns pro.    He led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding during their NCAA title quest.

U of L's Montrezl Harrell to Return for Junior Season; UK's Cauley-Stein Coming Back

University of Louisville basketball player Montrezlll return to the Cardinals for his junior season.     

Harrell, a forward, was the Cards’ leading rebounder last season and was second in scoring average.

He had been considering making himself eligible for the NBA draft, but believes another year at Louisville will improve his status.

Calipari on NBA Rumors: 'I Have the Best Job in the Country'

An executive with the Los Angeles Lakers is denying rumors that University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari will become the next head coach of the struggling NBA team.    

The rumors were floated by former UK star Rex Chapman on Twitter shortly before the Wildcats’ loss to Connecticut in Monday night’s NCAA championship game.  Chapman called Calipari’s departure a “done deal.”

Kentucky Falls to Connecticut in NCAA Title Game, 60-54

Shabazz Napier scored 22 points and Connecticut won its second NCAA title in four years, beating Kentucky 60-54 in the championship game Monday night.

Napier is among three UConn seniors who were part of the Huskies' 2011 title. That trio stayed after coach Jim Calhoun's retirement even when the Huskies were ineligible for the NCAA tournament last season.

They came back strong in coach Kevin Ollie's second season, and the Huskies (32-8) went all the way to their fourth overall title.

UK's Aaron Harrison 'Not Afraid to Miss' Game-Winning Shots

The Kentucky Wildcats take on the Connecticut Huskies tonight for the men’s NCAA basketball championship.         

UK got by Wisconsin 74 to 73 Saturday night after Aaron Harrison put the Wildcats ahead with a long three-pointer with just under six seconds remaining.    It was Harrison’s third straight game-winning shot.

"The biggest thing is, he’s not afraid to miss.  He’s comfortable in his own skin, he knows how hard he’s worked," said Kentucky coach John Calipari.

Kentucky Wildcats Beat Wisconsin 74-73, Will Face UConn for NCAA Title

Aaron Harrison hit a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left, after taking a pass from his twin brother Andrew, and Kentucky beat Wisconsin 74-73 on Saturday night to advance to the national championship game.

The Harrison twins and all those Kentucky freshmen aren't one and done just yet.  

They will be playing for the Wildcats' ninth national championship Monday night in an unexpected title matchup.

Back Home in Texas, UK's Randle "Just Excited to be Playing" in Final Four

The men’s NCAA basketball tournament resumes this weekend with the Final Four.

The two national semifinal games will be played Saturday night in Arlington, Texas, with Florida facing Connecticut and Wisconsin squaring off with Kentucky.    The winners advance to the national championship game Monday night.      

The venue, AT&T Stadium, is not far from the Dallas neighborhood where UK’s Julius Randle grew up, but the Wildcats’ leading scorer says he’s thankful to be in a Final Four anywhere.
