College Football: Cards Beat EKU; Kentucky Notches First Win; WKU Falls to Vols

Teddy Bridgewater threw four touchdown passes and John Wallace added three field goals as the number eight Louisville Cardinals defeated Eastern Kentucky 44-7 today at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

U of L improves to 2-0 on the season heading into next week’s showdown with the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

The Wildcats (1-1) captured their first victory for new head coach Mark Stoops, defeating Miami (Ohio) 41-7 at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Cards and Cats will square off next Saturday at noon.

College Football: Cards Host EKU; UK Seeks First Win For Stoops

The Louisville Cardinals return to college football action Saturday at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, where they will host Eastern Kentucky.    The Cards are ranked eighth in the country this week in the AP and USA Today/coaches polls. 

Coach Charlie Strong recorded his first Louisville victory against the Colonels in 2010.   

Both teams won their opening games this season.  Strong says he is pleased with his team’s 49-7 victory over Ohio.

U of L Advances in College Football Polls

The Louisville Cards moved up a spot this week in college football’s Associated Press and USA Today/coaches polls.

U of L is ranked eighth in both polls after a 49-7 season-opening win over Ohio University Sunday.

The Cards take on Eastern Kentucky University Saturday at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Alabama captured the top spot in both college football polls this week.

Western Kentucky Tops Kentucky Wildcats 35-26

In college football, Western Kentucky beat Kentucky 35-26 Saturday night, making coach Bobby Petrino a winner in his debut on the Hilltoppers’ sideline.

The Hilltoppers also beat their in-state rival for a second straight year, though they didn't need overtime like they did last year in this win over the Southeastern Conference program. They outgained Kentucky 487-419 in total offense and held the ball for 35 minutes.

The loss ruined Mark Stoops’ head coaching debut at Kentucky.

Western Kentucky led throughout the game, which was played at LP Field in Nashville.

Facing High Expectations, Cards Open 2013 Season Sunday

The Louisville Cardinals return to action in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium for the first time since their Sugar Bowl upset of Florida.

U of L takes on Ohio in the teams’ season opener Sunday afternoon.

Coach Charlie Strong’s Cardinals are ranked ninth in the country, their highest-ever preseason ranking.

Controversial Coach Bobby Petrino's Return to Kentucky

Jeff Brohm was a star quarterback for the Louisville Cardinals in the ’90s.

These days, he’s the assistant head coach at a school a couple of hours south in Bowling Green—at Western Kentucky University.

And he sees similarities between UofL then and WKU now.

“When I was there, we had a well-known coach who had success winning Super Bowls and national championships in Coach Schnellenberger and a program that, you know, a little bit before I got there almost shut down," Brohm said.

U of L/UK Football Game Will Become Teams' Season Finale Starting in 2014

The University of Louisville's annual September football showdown with Kentucky will now be a regular season-ending rivalry game starting next year.

The schools on Wednesday announced an agreement that shifts the intrastate matchup to the regular season's final weekend. Louisville will host the 2014 game on Nov. 29.

U of L: Teddy Bridgewater Has Broken No NCAA Autograph Rules

This football is one of many items signed by Teddy Bridgewater that are available for sale online

The University of Louisville says it’s “comfortable” that quarterback Teddy Bridgewater violated no NCAA rules in the signing of memorabilia that was put up for sale online.

The statement comes amid an investigation of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel , who’s accused of accepting money for autographs.

Former Auburn Star Michael Dyer Joins Louisville Cardinals Football

University of Louisville football coach Charlie Strong says he wants to give running back Michael Dyer an opportunity to turn around his troubled past by allowing the former Auburn star to join the Cardinals this season.

Michael Dyer was the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 national championship game but eventually left Auburn after he was suspended for violating team rules.      Dyer has acknowledged he was using marijuana at the time.

Strong's U of L Contract Extension, Pay Raise Approved

The University of Louisville has approved an eight-year contract extension for football coach Charlie Strong.

The deal will pay Strong an annual base salary of $3.7 million, plus numerous performance bonuses, making him one of the country’s highest-paid college football coaches.

U of L Athletic Director Tom Jurich says Strong deserves it.

"I think he’s already lived up to it and earned it and in every aspect of his coaching ability, he’s got an A+ from me," he said.
