Former McMahan Fire Chief Paul Barth, who pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $200,000 from the Crusade for Children, has been ordered to prison weeks earlier than originally expected.

Barth's attorney, Thomas Clay, tells the Courier-Journal that Barth was notified about 10 days ago that he should report to the federal prison in Manchester, Ky., today. The prison assignment, which usually takes 45 to 60 days, took less than a month.

A federal judge has placed tougher bond restrictions on former McMahan Fire Chief Paul Barth.

Barth was sentenced last month to 41 months in prison for embezzling nearly $200,000 intended for the Crusade for Children charity. He was given up to 60 days to report to prison.

The new bond restrictions were imposed after prosecutors learned that Barth failed to report recent real estate transactions, including the sale of a Florida condo, that would have affected his ability to make restitution prior to his sentencing.

A hearing will be held this week in U.S. District Court on the bond conditions set for Paul Barth, the former McMahan Fire Chief who pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $200,000 intended for the Crusade for Children charity.

Prosecutors requested the hearing after Barth did not disclose two real estate transactions that could have impacted his ability to pay restitution.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Louisville says former McMahan Fire Chief Paul Barth failed to disclose two real estate transactions that would have affected his ability to pay back some $200,000 he embezzled from the Crusade for Children charity and the fire district.

At his sentencing hearing Monday , Barth said he was unable to make restitution until he sold his Louisville home. He was given until the close of business Wednesday to pay the money or sign an agreement under which the government would collect on the sale of the property.

The former chief of the McMahan Fire Department has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for embezzling nearly $200,000 from the Crusade for Children charity and the fire district.

Fifty-five year old Paul Barth pleaded guilty in June to mail fraud, money laundering and other charges.

Prosecutors say Barth, who was also chairman of the Crusade’s board of directors, directed charity funds donated through the fire department to his personal bank account, with some of the money used for vacations and expenses related to his Corvette car collection.

Under a plea agreement announced today, Paul Barth faces a recommended sentence of three years and five months in prison for mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

He must also pay $190,000 in restitution to the crusade and more than $8,000 to the McMahan Fire District.
