Four Fort Knox Schools to Shut Down at End of School Year

The inactivation of the 3rd Combat Brigade, 1st Infantry Division  at Fort Knox  is leading to the closure of half of the schools on the military base at the end of the school year.

The base currently has eight schools and about 2,000 students. Nearly 700 students on the base will leave the district when the combat brigade relocates, and four schools will be closed, according to the Department of Defense Education Activity, which oversees the schools serving military families.

Military Base Furlough Notices Going Out This Week

Military installations in Kentucky and elsewhere have begun receiving furlough notices this week. 

Under across-the-board spending cuts in the federal budget, civilian Defense Department employees must be furloughed 11 days between July and September. 

At Fort Campbell, that affects about 4,000 workers in support roles such as schools and the commissary.  Fort Campbell Public Affairs Director Bob Jenkins says the post is trying to keep disruptions to a minimum.

Indiana Launches Office of Defense Development

Indiana officials are starting an effort to attract more military spending to the state at the same time the Defense Department is facing billions of dollars in automatic federal budget cuts.

Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann  announced Monday that a longtime civilian executive at southern Indiana's Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center will lead the state's new Office of Defense Development.

Duane Embree will head up the office that Gov. Mike Pence created by executive order in January.
