Jefferson County Public Schools will on Monday night unveil the finalists from the 48 community submissions to design a new school.

The school district plans to open the winning School of Innovation design in the 2015-16 academic year. Last month, JCPS unveiled 12 semifinalists in the competition. Submitters included several teams of JCPS teachers, a group of Louisville museum leaders and a team of educators from Michigan.

What 3 New Kentucky Districts of Innovation Plan To Do With Schools

Three new Kentucky school districts have received District of Innovation status—meaning they can get waivers for a handful of state education department regulations.

The Kentucky Board of Education has approved Owensboro Independent, Owsley County and Trigg County school districts, all of which were rejected in the first group.

JCPS Considers Reimagination of Several Schools With Innovation in Mind

JCPS officials have proposed changes to The Academy at Shawnee, which is a low performing school.

Officials with the Louisville school district are proposing major changes to a few of its lower performing schools that would extend the school day, shift students around and create new positions.

The JCPS school board met this week to hear proposals that would affect several schools, but are focused on Frost Middle School, Myers Middle School and The Academy at Shawnee (formerly Shawnee High), all of which are deemed priority schools (aka persistently low-achieving schools).
